Velnode is a local-first browser. An account is optional and free, sync is end-to-end encrypted, and the free browser is never restricted. This document explains what a Velnode Account gives you, how encrypted sync works, how to manage your storage, and what Velnode Pro will add once it launches.
Velnode works fully without an account. Browsing, bookmarks, the Password Vault, Vee with your own API key, and every feature shipped in the current release are available without signing in and without a network connection.
A Velnode Account is an opt-in layer you add when you want your data available on more than one device. Creating one does not change how the browser works for signed-out users โ your local data remains the source of truth at all times.
To create an account, go to Settings โ Account or open velora://account in the address bar.
| Benefit | Detail |
|---|---|
| Free, always | A Velnode Account costs nothing. There is no paywall on sign-in, sync, or any of the categories below. |
| Sign in on any device | Your bookmarks, history, notes, workspaces, pins, settings, and vault follow you when you sign in. |
| 250 MB of encrypted sync storage | Every account gets 250 MB of cloud storage for synced data, included at no cost. |
| Encrypted sync | All synced data is encrypted on your device before it leaves. Only ciphertext ever reaches Velnode's servers โ Velnode cannot read it. |
| Recovery Kit | A 24-word phrase generated at sign-up. It is the only way to re-wrap your data key after a password reset. Keep it safe. |
| Storage view | See exactly how much of your 250 MB each category uses, and clear data you no longer need. |
Sync covers seven categories. Each has its own on/off toggle in Settings โ Sync; all are on by default when you are signed in.
Every category is encrypted on your device before it is uploaded. The server stores only opaque ciphertext it cannot read. Even Velnode cannot read your synced data โ the encryption key is derived from your password on your device and is never sent to the server in usable form.
This is sometimes called zero-knowledge encryption. The practical consequence is that Dignity New Zealand Limited cannot read your bookmarks, your history, your notes, or your vault contents, even if legally compelled. There is no backdoor, because building one would require holding a key that we do not hold.
When the vault arrives on a new device it is locked. A prompt guides you to unlock it with your vault passphrase. Signing in to your Velnode Account does not unlock the vault; only the vault passphrase does.
To stop syncing a specific category, go to Settings โ Sync and toggle that category off. Turning a category off stops future sync for it; data already on the server is not deleted and remains available if you turn sync back on.
Once you sign in, Velnode keeps you signed in across restarts by quietly rotating your session token in the background. If you prefer to enter your password on every launch, turn on "Always ask me to sign in on launch" in Settings โ Sync. If a session expires, sync pauses and a prompt appears โ your local data is never affected by a session event.
Open Settings โ Sync โ Storage to see a breakdown of how much cloud storage each synced category is using. The view shows each category as its own row so you can see at a glance where your quota is going.
From the storage view you can clear history or other data categories. A clear operation:
Your local data on the current device is not automatically removed; Velnode will ask you what to do locally as part of the clear flow.
Every Velnode Account includes 250 MB of free encrypted sync storage. See the in-app Settings โ Sync โ Storage screen for your current usage against that quota.
Velnode Pro has not launched yet. It is planned as a paid, optional subscription and is shown in-app as "coming soon," with a notify-me option so you can hear when it becomes available. Nothing about Pro is available to subscribe to or pay for today.
When Velnode Pro launches, it is expected to add:
These are planned benefits and may change before launch.
Cloud sync is free for every account today, Pro or no Pro. The free browser is never restricted: every feature available today remains free and is not gated behind a future subscription. When Pro does launch, it will be additive โ not a paywall retrofitted onto existing functionality.
To be notified when Velnode Pro launches, use the Notify me option on the in-app "coming soon" screen at Settings โ Account โ Upgrade. There is nothing to subscribe to or pay for yet.
When you create your Velnode Account, Velnode generates a 24-word Recovery Kit and shows it to you once. Write it down or save the printable PDF Emergency Kit. Dignity New Zealand Limited never stores it.
If you forget your password and reset it, Velnode uses the Recovery Kit to re-wrap your encrypted data key under the new password. Without the Recovery Kit, a password reset restores your ability to log in but cannot recover previously encrypted data โ this is the unavoidable consequence of zero-knowledge encryption.
To delete your account, go to Settings โ Account โ Delete account. Dignity New Zealand Limited will delete your account record, session tokens, and server-side encrypted blobs within 30 days. Your local data on your device is not affected.
Velnode's development today is funded by donations, not by Pro โ see velnode.app/donate.
